Starlight, Star Bright
January 18, 2005 Dear Barbara: Thank you for organizing the Starlight, Star Bright fund raising event on May 19, 2005. I greatly appreciate the commitment of the MacKay Foundation to support breast cancer research at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. This should be a great evening for all involved. Breast cancer research at the Wake Forest School of Medicine will benefit greatly from the funds raised through the Starlight, Star Bright. Breast cancer research is a major focus of our Cancer Center. We have established a Breast Cancer Center of Excellence within the Cancer Center to promote breast cancer research in the areas of basic laboratory breast cancer biology, public health sciences, and clinical research. The Breast Cancer Center of Excellence has active research programs in all three areas. Within the area of basic laboratory breast cancer biology, Wake Forest researchers are studying genetic influences on breast cancer risk, growth control signals, including those that are derived from the diet via fatty acid metabolism, and the interaction of breast cancer with its local environment. In the areas of public health, Wake Forest researchers are studying screening in underserved populations and quality of life issues among breast cancer survivors. Our clinical research focuses on novel imaging techniques such as positron emission tomography and novel therapeutics such as therapeutic peptides (small protein) derived from combinatorial libraries. The funds received from the Starlight, Star Bright event will be used to stimulate new research, exploring novel ideas that may lead to breakthroughs. The funds will be awarded competitively. Researchers with novel ideas about breast cancer will be asked to submit proposals detailing their ideas and their experimental approach. These proposals will be reviewed by an expert review panel and only the best proposals will be awarded funding. On behalf of the members of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine and the Breast Cancer Center of Excellence, I thank you for your support. If you have questions regarding our research activities, please contact me. I look forward to seeing you at Starlight, Star Bright. Sincerely, Steven Akman MD |
