Sports Night! Dear Barbara: Thank you for planning Sports Night! for 2005. Everyone had such a wonderful time last November and they are already talking about attending again this year. I greatly appreciate the commitment of the MacKay Foundation to support leukemia research in the Section on Hematology and Oncology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. I look forward to hearing who our sports celebrity will be for this years event. Leukemia Research will benefit greatly from the funds raised through the Sports Night. Our faculty members are at the cutting-edge of both laboratory and clinical research developments. The major use of these funds will be to help faculty members develop pilot data which will then help them compete for grants from the National Cancer Institute and other National Foundations. There are a number of important research projects for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma at this time. We are examining a number of new drugs which attach the toxic component of diseases such as diphtheria and anthrax to proteins that deliver the toxins directly to the malignant leukemia or lymphoma cells. We are also evaluating the use of a vitamin D analog in the treatment of leukemia and the myelodysplastic syndromes (frequently called preleukemias). There are a number of other ideas waiting funding to move forward with preliminary research. On behalf of our faculty in the Section on Hematology and Oncology at Wake Forest University, I thank you for your support. If you have questions regarding our research activities, please contact me. I look forward to seeing you at Sports Night. Sincerely, Bayard L. Powell, MD |
